Your Moving Questions, Answered
Free, No-Obligation Estimate
The things Queens movers get asked most: cost, walk-ups and pre-war stairwells, co-op COIs and freight elevators, alternate-side parking, deposits, and exactly how moving day runs.
Questions We Hear a Lot
What will my move cost?
It really comes down to how much you are moving and how tough the building is to get in and out of. Book two movers and a truck and the meter runs from $110/hr, with a written estimate in your hands before we touch a box. Want one fixed figure instead? Cris will give you a flat quote, and that agreed number is the number you pay. Once a move heads across state lines, the math switches to weight and mileage.
My place is a fifth-floor walk-up in a pre-war building. Can you handle it?
That is a lot of what we do. Half of Queens is pre-war walk-ups, and Cris and the crew are used to steep, narrow stairwells, tight landings, and the turns a couch or a dresser barely clears. We measure the stairwell ahead of time, pad the rails and jambs, and carry the heavy pieces down flight by flight, so a five-story walk-up never turns into a problem.
My building needs a certificate of insurance and a freight-elevator booking. Can you handle that?
Yes, and it is routine for us. Most Queens co-op and condo boards want a certificate of insurance on file before move day, and a lot of towers require the freight elevator reserved to a set window. Send us the building’s requirements when you book, and Cris files the COI and books the elevator, so nothing holds you up in the lobby on moving day.
There is no driveway and the street is a tight one-way. Is that a problem?
Not a problem at all, and honestly it is the norm all over Queens. Pass along the address at booking and we will work out a spot for the truck, how alternate-side parking falls that day, and the distance of the carry to your door. Our crew shows up expecting a tight one-way and a walk from the truck, not a wide suburban driveway.
When does the hourly clock start?
The meter kicks in the second Cris and the crew get to work at your place, not back when we pulled out of the yard. Past that first hour every minute is counted on its own, so seventy minutes bills as seventy and never jumps up to a rounded two hours. And we walk you through the rate and how drive time factors in before anyone picks up the first box.
Do you take a deposit?
Just a small refundable one that locks in your date, and since it credits right back against your final total, none of it ever disappears. Give us a couple of days’ notice to cancel and every cent is returned. All of it is spelled out in your booking from day one.
How and when do I pay?
You owe nothing until the work is finished, never a moment sooner. Cards, check, and cash all work. Before we pull away, you and Cris run through the final total right there at your door and you sign off on it.
Are tips expected?
Never, and you will not find one quietly added to your invoice. When the crew truly knocks it out of the park, a lot of customers pass along ten to fifteen percent for the team to share, by cash or card, but whether you do is completely up to you.
Is there anything you won’t load?
Just a short list, and it all traces back to safety and the law: propane, gasoline, paint, or anything flammable, along with ammunition, houseplants, food that spoils, and pets. Got a piece that is oversized, seriously heavy, or especially valuable? Mention it at booking so the right gear rides along.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Brisk Movers holds New York licensing and insurance, and Cris works every job through with his own crew, no broker wedged in the middle skimming a cut. Want the coverage specifics? Just ask, and we will walk through your valuation options before anything gets locked in.
What if a piece gets damaged?
Thorough padding keeps it uncommon, but should a piece get dinged, we flag it on the spot and open the claim that very day. Ahead of the job we compare released coverage against full-value, so you go in knowing precisely how a claim plays out.
How far ahead should I book?
A regular local move usually needs only a week or two of lead time. The end of the month and the summer run book up quickly, so give it three or four weeks in those windows and pad a bit more for a Saturday. Cris keeps room for last-minute moves too, though, so a quick call never hurts.
Do you take on pianos, gun safes, and the really heavy stuff?
Yes, Cris takes those on all the time. Whether it is an upright or a baby grand, a loaded safe, a slate pool table, a weighty antique, or a framed canvas, each piece travels on the correct board or dolly, strapped and padded, with the path through narrow stairwells and doorways mapped out beforehand.
Will you handle the packing?
However much or little suits you. Want the entire apartment boxed up? Consider it done. Only the kitchen and the breakables need doing? That is fine as well. We show up with heavy-duty cartons and paper, mark every box by its room, and once the truck is unloaded we can unpack you at the new place.
Do you move out of state?
We do, and the same crew stays with your shipment from the first pickup right through to drop-off. Nothing gets brokered away or transferred into some stranger’s trailer at a depot, and your delivery lands in a window you can genuinely build plans around. A big share of our jobs are people heading into or out of New York.
Do you have storage?
We do. Whether it is a brief stretch between leases or a run of months while your next place comes together, your belongings rest in a clean, locked space with every item written onto an inventory. Our crew hauls it in and later hauls it back out, so renting a truck a second time never comes up.
I’m relocating to Queens from another state. Can you help?
Definitely, a solid chunk of what we do is people landing in the city, plenty of them coming in from out of state. We set the delivery window, meet you over at the new place, and take care of the parking, the walk-up stairs, or the building COI from our side. Your belongings travel on our truck with our own crew and are never passed off to whoever happened to bid lowest that week.
Can I move or cancel my date?
Absolutely. Give at least two days’ notice to move or cancel your date and the whole deposit is refunded. Each term sits in your booking in plain language, so nothing gets left to guesswork.
